Sometimes when we are not sure which industry to work in because there are so many to choose from, life can be tough. Make the wrong choice, and you could be stuck in a job that you hate or worst still a job that is a dead end in with no chance of progression. Arguably one of the most attractive businesses to work in the tourism industry – especially if you are an extrovert.
Socializing with multip nationalities, getting the chance to work almost anywhere in the world once you have gained experience within this industry, and working in a job where often people don’t care about getting the highest possible salary they can land. Rather most people (not all) in the travel industry are happy as long as they work in a nice location. It is almost like being on a permanent vacation, but its work if that makes sense.
A New Sector Has Taken Hold of The Travel Industry
The vacation rental industry is still in its early days believe or not. Admittedly it feels like they have been around forever, and in some ways it has. However, vacation rental properties were better known as time-shares back in the day.
However, these property management or time-share businesses have had to make major readjustments because new websites such as Lodgify.com have given people the opportunity to create their own vacation rental website that doesn’t need an office location to operate from.
In fact, the arrival of the many vacation rental websites we have been seeing within the tourism industry has meant those that own a property do not need to use a time-share or property management company. This saves them huge costs and allows the holiday home owner to offer guests far better deals and increase their profit margins.
Of course, the time-share management companies have also had to readjust. They have also had to jump on the vacation rental bandwagon listing their time-share properties as well as customer properties (those that fully own their property) on the vacation rental websites available today.
Here are just a few of those sites:

Why Have These Websites Opened Up A Whole New Job Market In The Travel Industry?
Running a vacation rental website on multiple websites is no easy task. It requires solutions that hotels generally don’t have to think about. For example, a hotel will just need someone to list the hotel and its rooms available plus amenities/facilities.
A vacation rental company will need to the same, but for each different property. Now a vacation rental business owner with say 15 properties has 15 different places to list on 10 different websites. Whereas a hotel has maybe 3 or 4 different room types to lists.
Also, remember that the vacation rental company generally does not need a physical location. Most hosts are running their businesses online. They don’t want to be updating listings on multiple websites, and they do not want to be answering multiple customer inquiries.
This is why there are now hundreds of new jobs in the travel industry. Those jobs are online too. The role of someone working as an admin for one of these virtually operated online vacation rental companies includes:
- Dealing with guest inquiries and guest issues
- Ensuring cleaners are scheduled to go in and prepare the place for the next guest
- Making sure pictures are up to date
- Making sure listings on all websites are up to date
- Adjusting prices according to the season and current market rates
- Offering a special deal where they apply
- Arranging for maintenance to fox problems (WiFi, Cooking Equipment, Beds, and so on)
The list goes on. Plus, this needs to be placed on an easy to use management system so all the people working online for the vacation rental company owner understand how to run the business smoothly.
What Is The Major Difference? You Can Work From Anywhere!
Much of this sounds very similar to what a hotel manager has to deal with as well as your average hotel staff. However, at the beginning of this piece, we mentioned having that dream job as long the location of the hotel or travel company the person is working for is in a great place.
On the other hand, if you aim for a career in the vacation rental industry is that you will have the opportunity to work online and get paid a reasonable salary. That means the biggest difference is that as long as you have a laptop and an internet connection, you can work from anywhere in the world you choose. Work on the beach, work next to a lake, work at the airport before catching a plane to your next destination, or just simply work from home in the area you are from.
If you are just starting out in the tourism industry, then you might not be able to find a job online immediately. You may still need to go and work in a hotel or for a travel company to gain experience. However, if you already have experience in the travel industry, then landing an online job within the vacation rental industry would be a matter of keeping your ears and eyes open for the right opportunity and apply when that opportunity comes along.
